  • Water Treatment

    • High Performance Desalination Membrane

Aims to raise water flux and reduce membrane fouling in reverse osmosis membranes used for seawater desalination. Zwitterionic polymers are added to the active layer of the thin-film composite membrane; increased hydrophilicity and electrostatic repulsion delivered up to 31% higher water flux while keeping salt rejection at seawater desalination conditions.

    • A Novel Protocol for High Performance WLANs

Increases the capacity of wireless local area networks by letting a device transmit and receive on the same channel at the same time (full-duplex communication). The synchronized contention window (S-CW) protocol modifies the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer to synchronize the backoff slots of the nodes; it works together with legacy 802.11 nodes and can be implemented on off-the-shelf hardware.

    • Handheld Device for Early Detection of Multiple Cancer

A handheld prototype for measuring multiple cancer and cardiovascular disease biomarkers on site, in first-level health facilities with limited access to advanced laboratory tests. Capacitive biosensors on a pre-activated cartridge measure them simultaneously and label-free in human serum, and report the result in less than 30 minutes.

    • A New Biocoating For Better Heat Transfer

Aims to improve boiling heat transfer, which remains inefficient in refrigeration systems, electronic components and heat exchangers because of low critical heat flux and low heat-transfer coefficient. The porous structure of this organic, biocompatible coating creates far more active nucleation sites than a bare surface, and it can also be applied to closed geometries such as microtubes.

    • High-Performance Antioxidant Effect

Aims to make the most of the antioxidant effect of quercetin to prevent and repair oxidative damage in living cells, which is associated with cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and aging. Quercetin is loaded onto surface-modified titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles; the carrier increases its penetration into the cell and allows more quercetin to be loaded.

    • High Performance Modified Superplasticizer for Cement

Aims to improve how long superplasticizers, which lower the water-to-cement ratio for strength, keep a concrete mix flowing. The modified polycarboxylate ether (PCE) admixture gives higher fluidity and better slump retention than commercial products and stays effective in high-sulfate media; it is produced without a chain transfer agent or a final neutralization step.

    • Active Food Packaging by Nanotechnology

An active packaging material that, unlike conventional packaging, interacts with the food to extend shelf life and improve food safety. Non-toxic clay nanoparticles added to standard packaging films reduce gas permeability and scavenge the ethylene gas that makes fruits and vegetables spoil; films coated with thyme-oil-loaded nanoparticles show long-lasting antibacterial activity.
